The Orthopterists' Society's Orthoptera Database Committee in cooperation with the
Illinois Natural History Survey has funds available for support of any species file
within the scope of superorder group Polyneoptera. Members of the Orthopterists'
Society are invited to apply. Applications should be sent to
David Eades.
Grants are available in two categories:
- The first category pays travel expense to come to Champaign, Illinois, USA for
training in editing the Orthoptera Species File. Time in Champaign should
be from one to two weeks unless reasons can be given for longer or shorter periods.
Applications may be submitted at any time.
- The second category provides for a project as defined by the applicant. The
project must involve benefit to the Orthoptera Species File or to a similar database
for a group within Polyneoptera. The usual benefit is the addition of more
data into the database for Orthoptera or the development of a new database for a
different polyneopteran order.
Funding available for 2009 is estimated at US $30,000. The number of grants
to share this amount will depend on the applications received. Grants may
request funding for up to three years. Applications must be received by December
15, 2008. The committee will complete its consideration and announce the results
by January 15, 2009.

Committee members are appointed by the President of the Orthopterists' Society.
The responsibilities of the committee are:
- To advise on design of database and priorities for tasks.
- To grant awards from the endowment.
- To review proposed changes to higher ranks within the database. This has
been proposed, but there is no current consensus that this should be a committee
responsibility.
